Sure it needs a new floor and probably everything else, but this is a solid price for a 1961 Title. Im picturing even basketcase cars like this to really get expensive as all the legally modifiable cars get particularly rare.

Meh. Many mods are emissions compliant. Hell, you can get over 500hp and be emissions compliant pretty easy these days.

It’s funny how much more a 1974 car will bring in California, versus a 1976 car of the EXACT SAME Model. People ARE aware of what a pain in the ass it is to make an early CARB car comply...

I really want Chevy to sell the LTG motor (275hp 2.0T from Cadillacs & Camaros) as one of their smog-legal “E-Rod” packages. There are so many late ‘70s and early ‘80s cars that would be made 10x better, and cheaper to run, if an off-the-shelf smog solution were available.

I’ve been wondering if maybe younger car people might start going for classic hot rods. Pre-1950 stuff. The people who did them originally are passing in to history and the boomers weren’t all that in to them since they were their dad s’ cars so they aren’t all that expensive and t here are plenty of them still around being dug out of estate sales and drug out of barns. Plus, there are absolutely no regulations on them so if you can build it you can drive it.

The testing involved can be a right pain in the ass if you’re not careful and you might have to get refereed unless everything has EO numbers and you have records of them. Compared to “Don’t care”.

Oh don’t even get me started. $ 400 for a catalytic converter for a Miata (49 states). Same exact catalytic converter for a Miata in CA because has an EO number ? $800.
My 1991 Miata is up around 213k miles and needs a new motor. Want to put a rebuilt 1990 motor in it? Illegal. Want to put a 1994 motor in it? Not unless you bring over all the 1994 smog equipment. Oh, did you need a throttle adapter plate for the intake manifold to make it fit? Illegal.
Did you move here from another state? Did you find that your car, which was made to run on premium has that didn’t suck doesn’t run right on the state’s poor quality 91 octane? Want to put a tune on it? Illegal.
Want to change to a cone filter? Illegal.
Want to put a turbo kit on your Miata? Illegal. Unless you buy a kit that has paid it’s bounty to the state. What if yours is actually cleaner emitting than the state certified one? Illegal.
Brushing off smog is like the arguments people make about the cartels in Mexico. “It’s fine because they protect the tourists from the crooked police.” WAT.

The easier answer is never CA.
It's a nice place to visit (somewhat) but I'd never want to live there.

That wo uld be nice if they could package it at or under 5k and with a manual.

The weather is a plus, otherwise its heavy regulation and taxes.

I always wondered how much those could be improved with a switch to a 5 or 6 speed transmission.A turbo for low end grunt would be great too

The taxes dont bother me, but the people, droughts and natural disasters plus weird regulations.

Thats very optimistic, but perhaps.
Arnt most pre-60's cars a toy at this point? Yo unger generations need tools, y ou can hotrod a beat 70's Malibu and still get to work most of the time but commuting to work in a T bucket is another dimension.

De pends on the place, Ca is large and LA people are very different from SF and SF to norcal. Going with that the natural disasters change based on where you are, norcal and sf have more earthquakes while the droughts impact is more significant south around LA.
Oregon has worse people but better infrastructure i n my experience

I keep watching prices for some of the older stuff myself. I haven’t seen a real drop in prices, but it looked like even as the later 50’s to early 70’s stuff skyrocketed most cars from around 53 and earlier haven’t really gone up much at all.

I don't understand why ramming a sniffer up it's but and proving your car emits under the legal limits isn't good enough. The whole EO number thing is just a way for the government to get more money, if it wasn't you would be allowed to pass with a sniffer test.

I’ve genuinely been considering selling the C5 and buying a pre-smog car. Something that can house a healthy V8 , plus as much added power as I can afford to apply to it.
Would love to do a restomod build out of something wholly unexpected, like a Hudson Wasp, Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, Studebaker GT Hawk , or a Mercedes 3 50S L. Hell, I also wouldn’t mind doing a Ranchero or El Camino, so I can have a higher degree of functionality to go along with it.

I’ve always thought one of those would make a neat race car akin to the Monaco Rally Falcon. Then I saw one recently and realized how big it is. It’s not a very compact compact......
Same length as a ‘64 Stang and only 2 inches wider.
Falcon
1964 Mustang
7 ” shorter and 5" Narrower than a 2020 Stang.
2020 Mustang

Definitely. I’m talking project/fun car all the way, though if you put a modern drivetrain in something like a ‘38 Ford and upgrade the brakes and suspension there isn’t anything keeping it from daily duty.

It seems there are still some deals to be found if its not the high value targets of ponycars and coupe variants of 60's muscle.
A Hudson hornet is the dream restomod in my book, Ranchero is probably the most logical though.

think of it as a skin for whatever chassis is actually viable for being fast

Yeah, the Ranchero makes the most sense. I could build a fun muscle car with the cargo capacity for the three times a year I need a truck bed.

As a recent resident, I don’t mind the smog test, it wasn’t the big deal I expected it to be. Less of a hassle than the annual safety test I dealt with in my other state.
Smog test are only required when a vehicle reaches 5 years, and then every other year after that . Most late model vehicles are simply plugged into an OBD connector, no sniffing test,in and out in about 10 minutes.
I’m more a motorcycle guy and California is like heaven for that. Not only zero smog or safety checks, but legal lane splitting and filtering.
Main issue with the state is $400,000 buys you a dump in a bad neighborhood, $3.30 87 octane is considering cheap and I can only buy 10 round magazines for my AR-15. The positives so far have outweighed the negatives.

There’s a very good reason for that- the Mustang originally was a Falcon under the skin. They’re essentially the same car.

California must be weird because a lot of the country runs emissions checks. If it is below legal limits in CO it is good to go. Turbo, cone filter, cold air, tune........doesn’t matter. Engine swaps must meet the year of the new engine.

California doesn't care about the actual emissions. They run a racquet. If any part between your air filter and catalytic converter hasn't been approved by the California Air Resources Board (i.e. paid an exorbitant fee), then its not legal.

Part of the reason I never wanna move to Cali, no matter how beautiful it is there...
